Who is freshman DB Devin Alves?

A dynamic senior season and a timely coaching change led to Virginia Tech’s late addition of Melbourne (FL) three-star athlete Devin Alveswho signed with the Hokies in February as a member of the 2022 recruiting class.

Who is Devin Alves?

The 6-foot 2-inch athlete out of Florida was not on the Virginia Tech radar prior to Brent Pry‘s arrival in Blacksburg.

Actually, huh wasn’t really on the Power Five radar until late in his senior season after helping lead Melbourne to a conference title at both wide receiver and cornerback. As a wide receiver, Alves led Melbourne Senior with 61 receptions for 1,249-yards and 15 touchdowns, averaging 96.1 yards per game.

He also led the team in interceptions with four. Hey totaled 42 tackles, including four tackles for loss and one sack, during the 2021 season.

Following his senior season, Alves chose not to sign a National Letter of Intent in December to see how his recruitment would shake out. Florida State and Louisville showed some attention, but most programs were already full and couldn’t make the numbers work. He had also spoken with a number of junior college options and FCS possibilities.

Part of what limited Alves’s recruitment was his lack of junior film, playing in only five games due to COVID.

The limited junior film and senior year production had piqued Stu Holt‘s interest at Louisville and that continued when he arrived at Virginia Tech. Alves was invited to campus for a late official visit and ultimately committed to the Hokies, enrolling over the summer.

Alves is slated to play defensive back at Virginia Tech.

A three-sport athlete, Alves also played basketball and ran track in high school, recording an 11.12 PR in the 100m.
